BIG CITY LIGHTS* is the Gold Coast’s brand new arts festival and they have announced their program is now live!

4 nights of light, design, installation and live performance will transform the Gold Coast CBD from the 7 – 10 July 2022

The inaugural BIG CITY LIGHTS* will open in just over one month’s time, with a mesmerising four- nights of light, colour and creativity that is set to transform the Gold Coast CBD. The festival’s program has been announced today and features stunning immersive audio-visual experiences, large-scale digital works, 3D-mapping and unexpected projection sites by artists working in the fields of light, installation, architecture and digital design.

Audiences can enjoy this free-for-everyone, night-time experience, as the city’s CBD is transformed into hypnotic displays by leading local, national and international artists and companies including Michaela Gleave (NSW), Buchan Group (National), Jacob Leary (TAS), IKONIX (QLD), Claudio Kirac (QLD), Kirsten Baade (QLD) and Peter Thiedeke (UK / QLD) to name a few.

Southport CBD will feature five incredible “art zones,” as rooftops, building facades, alleyways, carparks and shopfronts across Nerang Street, Scarborough St, Young Street, Regent Lane and Davison Lane come alive with colourful creations. Meanwhile, some of the city’s renowned hospitality venues including Mr P.P.’s Deli & Rooftop, Vinnie’s Dive Bar and Last Night on Earth will host key installations and a vibrant line-up of live music programming.

BIG CITY LIGHTS* will be delivered by Placemakers* Gold Coast (best known for the city’s flagship annual arts festival – BLEACH*), with the new festival set to further highlight Queensland and the Gold Coast as a major cultural tourism destination to Australia and the world.

BIG CITY LIGHTS* PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Multi-disciplinary artist, Jacob Leary will present EXCESSSSSSCAPE at the Hutong Garden in Davison Lane. His work intertwines sculpture, video and painting to create a technicolour, moving piece of art set to mesmerize audiences.

Michaela Gleave’s FEAR EATS THE SOUL is reminiscent of an abandoned theme park ride or a decaying sign from a forgotten horror film. The five-minute electrical glitch loop, which appears in Regent Lane is set to be amongst one of the most talked about installations of the festival.

The award-winning creative team from Buchan Group, who have featured countless works as part of Vivid Sydney over the last decade, will transform part of Davison Lane with their work DANCING PARTICLES, using infrared sensors to scan audience participants and project them onto buildings.
