gcVIP sits down with Aussie Pop icon Kate Miller-Heidke

Hailing from Gladstone in regional Queensland, Australian singer-songwriter and actress Kate Miller-Heidke is a now a household name across the globe.

Kate’s heartfelt performance – and the out-of-this world staging – of her song “Zero Gravity” won her first place in her semi-final and a top ten placing at the recent 2019 Eurovision Grand Final on the Gold Coast.

The ARIA and Helpmann Award winning Pop icon continues to make music that effortlessly melds indie-pop, folk and opera. And, she is the only artist in history to have performed at Coachella, the New York Metropolitan Opera, and the Eurovision Song Contest!

Continuing her love affair with the Gold Coast, HOTA, Home of the Arts has just announced that Kate Miller-Heidke will perform with collaborator and husband Keir Nuttall for a hotly anticipated live performance on Saturday 5th October 2019.

gcVIP Society sits down with Kate Miller-Heidke ahead of her latest national tour:

Q: Did you have a chance to get out and about on the Gold Coast when you were competing in the Eurovision ‘Australia Decides’ national final?

K: Not much, the schedule was intense. Though not quite as intense as the Eurovision finals! I tend to be a bit of a hermit before performing. I need to stay out of noisy places and avoid talking too much. It’s all a tad dull until I get on stage.

Q: Since you were on the Gold Coast performing in the Australian National Final and winning, how has your direction in life changed with being propelled back into a national and then an international spotlight.

K: The Eurovision experience was an absolute roller coaster – an unforgettable experience. I feel like I do have some new fans now, as well as older ones who have reconnected with my music, which is lovely. I feel lucky to have had such a long career in music, but I know from experience that the ‘spotlight’ doesn’t last – I try not to let it affect me too much, I just keep working. I’m in the studio now recording for a new album.

Q: Tell us a little bit more about what fans can expect on your Australian Tour.

K:
It’s going to be really special. There will be a mix of back catalogue stuff as well as some rarer stuff, requests and brand new songs. I’m touring with brilliant musicians who contribute so much to the sound.

Q: Will you have any time to get around the Gold Coast when you are here in October for your performance at HOTA.

K: Possibly, depending on our travel schedule! I’d love to take my three-year-old son Ernie to Dreamworld or Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary at some stage. I’ll also be at the Gold Coast for several days at the end of August for a song writing retreat. I can’t wait to escape the oppressive Melbourne weather and get some sunshine.

Q: Any favourite Gold Coast restaurants, attractions or locations you are hoping to visit? Will you have a few days downtime?

K: I used to spend childhood holidays at the Gold Coast. Rainbow Bay is one of my favourite places on the planet. I also love going to the hinterland, particularly Springbrook. As far as restaurants go, all recommendations are welcome.

Q: After the national tour, what is 2020 looking like for you? What is on the horizon?

K: I will be recording my fifth studio album, as well as a trip to New York to do a workshop for ‘Muriel’s Wedding the Musical’, and something else in December which I am not yet at liberty to reveal. It’s all super busy and fun.

Kate Miller-Heidke live at HOTA, Home of the Arts on Saturday 5thOctober 2019.
